Virginia Is for Lovers: A Romantic Couples Getaway in Alexandria

There’s a reason Virginia’s longtime tourism slogan has been “Virginia is for Lovers.” Alexandria has quietly become one of the East Coast’s most charming destinations for a romantic couples getaway thanks to its waterfront atmosphere, historic character, and relaxed luxury appeal.

And few places embody that atmosphere better than Alexandria — with its waterfront sunsets, historic streets, candlelit restaurants, boutique hotels, and relaxed walkability that makes it easy for couples to slow down and simply enjoy being together.

Located just minutes from Washington, Alexandria offers a completely different pace from the nation’s capital. It feels intimate, welcoming, historic, and effortlessly romantic without feeling overwhelming or overly formal. Whether you’re planning an anniversary weekend, a spontaneous couples escape, a mini-moon, or simply looking for a destination where you can reconnect and relax, Alexandria has a way of drawing people back again and again.

Waterfront Walks, Historic Streets & Slower Travel

One of the most romantic things about Alexandria is that it naturally encourages people to slow down.

Couples spend hours wandering the waterfront, strolling hand-in-hand along King Street, listening to musicians playing on street corners, and stopping into local boutiques, wine bars, cafés, and galleries along the way. The twinkling lights that line many of the trees throughout Old Town create an atmosphere that feels magical in every season, whether you’re visiting during the holidays or on a warm summer evening.

Historic details are everywhere. The cobblestone streets of Captain’s Row remain one of the city’s favorite locations for engagement and wedding photos, while the old train tunnel near Lee Street Park offers another picturesque and historic backdrop couples love discovering together.

The marina itself is a lively focal point of the waterfront, filled with boats, movement, and beautiful river views that make it easy to linger longer than planned. Alexandria’s pedestrian-friendly layout — including portions of King Street that are closed to vehicle traffic — encourages meandering, window shopping, and spontaneous moments that often become the most memorable parts of a trip.

And history is never far away here. Knowing that George Washington himself once walked these same streets creates a sense of connection to the past that adds even more depth to the experience. Many of the buildings he frequented are still standing today.

One of my favorite examples is Virtue Feed & Grain, a thriving waterfront restaurant housed inside what was once a feed store serving local farmers. You can still see traces of the original painted signage on the old brick exterior — one of many reminders that Alexandria’s history isn’t staged or manufactured. It’s woven naturally into everyday life.

Boutique Hotels & Relaxed Luxury

Alexandria offers a wonderful mix of boutique hotels and upscale accommodations that feel refined without being intimidating.

For couples who want to stay in the heart of the waterfront atmosphere, Hotel Indigo Old Town Alexandria remains one of my personal favorites. Its location along the Potomac River makes it incredibly convenient for waterfront walks, restaurants, and evening cocktails while still maintaining a relaxed and approachable atmosphere.

Morrison House offers a more intimate boutique experience with classic Old Town charm, while The Alexandrian places guests directly in the center of lower King Street’s energy and walkability.

For travelers looking for a newer luxury option, AKA Alexandria offers a more modern and elevated feel in one of Old Town’s rapidly growing dining and entertainment areas filled with new restaurants and nightlife options.

And while technically farther up King Street, Lorien Hotel & Spa remains a lovely option for travelers who prioritize spa amenities and Metro accessibility, though its atmosphere differs somewhat from the historic waterfront energy found farther down King Street.

What makes Alexandria especially appealing is its version of luxury. It isn’t flashy or overly formal. Instead, it offers what I often think of as relaxed luxury — beautiful experiences, thoughtful details, exceptional dining, and walkable charm that feel welcoming and attainable rather than exclusive.

Romantic Restaurants, Wine Bars & Live Music

Alexandria’s dining scene plays a huge role in what makes it such a wonderful couples destination.

For waterfront dining, Jula's on the Potomac offers beautiful river views, outstanding food, and an elevated atmosphere tucked slightly away from the busiest sections of Old Town. Reaching the restaurant via elevator to its upper-floor location almost makes it feel like a hidden discovery.

Landini Brothers remains a longtime favorite for romantic Italian dinners, while Cedar Knoll offers another beautiful waterfront experience just outside the heart of Old Town with historic character, outdoor seating, and Potomac River views.

Couples looking for slower evenings over wine will love BRUT Champagne and Wine Bar and Sonoma Cellar, both wonderful places to unwind with excellent wine selections and relaxed atmospheres. Live music throughout Old Town adds to the experience, with venues like Light Horse and Daniel O'Connell's Irish Restaurant & Bar frequently hosting musicians and lively evening crowds.

Cocktail lovers should absolutely make time for The Parlour, also known locally as Madame Coco, one of my favorite intimate cocktail spots in the city.

And for something sweet, Lavender Moon Cupcakery offers creative cupcake flavors perfect for a mid-afternoon stop while exploring King Street.

Slow Mornings, Brunch & Local Favorites

Some of the best moments in Alexandria are often the simplest ones.

Saturday mornings at the local farmers market are a favorite tradition for both residents and visitors, creating a lively but relaxed atmosphere filled with flowers, pastries, coffee, local produce, and conversation.

For brunch or lunch, Fontaine Caffe & Creperie brings a charming French café atmosphere to Old Town with cozy indoor seating and a lovely outdoor patio that feels especially romantic on beautiful mornings.

Alexandria also appeals to travelers who enjoy discovering independent businesses rather than only large chains. Local boutiques, cigar shops, galleries like Principle Gallery and Galactic Panther, and independently owned cafés all contribute to the city’s welcoming and highly walkable atmosphere.

Why Alexandria Is a Romantic Couples Getaway

Alexandria has received countless accolades over the years as one of America’s best small cities, most romantic destinations, and best historic downtowns — and once you experience it for yourself, it’s easy to understand why.

Its location near Washington makes it incredibly accessible for travelers throughout the East Coast, while still feeling worlds away from the intensity and pace of a larger city.

What makes Alexandria truly special, though, is the feeling it creates.

It’s a city that invites couples to linger over dinner, wander without an agenda, stop into hidden wine bars, watch boats along the marina, and reconnect without feeling rushed. It offers history, charm, waterfront beauty, exceptional dining, and approachable elegance in a way that feels authentic rather than manufactured.
