10 Things That Surprised Me About My First River Cruise

Before my first river cruise, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect.

As a travel advisor and experienced traveler and ocean cruiser, I had booked vacations for others and traveled extensively myself. Still, when I boarded a Scenic River cruise through France, I quickly realized that river cruising was very different from what I had imagined.

Some of the surprises were practical. Others were delightful. A few were things I wish I had known beforehand.

If you're considering your first river cruise, here are ten things that surprised me most.

1. The Locks Were Fascinating

One of the things I remember most from my Scenic cruise was traveling through the locks.

If you've never experienced them before, it can be surprisingly interesting to watch the ship rise and fall as water levels change. Some locks only changed the water level by a few feet, while others lifted or lowered the ship several stories. I remember one lock that seemed nearly three times the height of the ship itself.

As the vessel entered the lock, the walls often felt incredibly close, making you appreciate the skill of the captain and crew. I expected beautiful scenery on my river cruise, but I never expected the locks themselves to become one of my favorite memories.

2. You May Wake Up Looking Directly Into Another Ship

This is probably the surprise that gets the biggest reaction when I tell people about it.

River cruise ships often dock side-by-side in popular ports. On several mornings, I opened my curtains only to find another ship parked so close that I could have almost reached out and touched it. The neighboring balconies were literally inches away from ours.

It's completely normal in river cruising, but it can be surprising if you're expecting wide-open views every morning. The upside is that you're often docked right in the heart of a destination, making it easy to step off the ship and begin exploring.

3. River Cruise Balconies Are Different From Ocean Cruise Balconies

Many first-time river cruisers assume balconies work exactly like they do on ocean cruise ships.

Not necessarily.

River ships are much narrower and lower to the water than ocean vessels. Depending on the cruise line and cabin category, your "balcony" may actually be a floor-to-ceiling window that opens electronically rather than a traditional walk-out balcony.

Scenic offers several cabin styles, and other luxury lines have their own approaches. It's important to understand the differences before selecting your stateroom.

4. You Unpack Once and See Multiple Destinations

This is one of the biggest advantages of river cruising.

Instead of packing and unpacking every few days, you settle into your cabin and let the ship do the traveling.

You can spend your day exploring charming towns, historic sites, vineyards, castles, or local markets, then return to the same room every evening.

For travelers who enjoy seeing multiple destinations without constantly changing hotels, it's hard to beat.

5. The Amount Included Can Be Remarkable

Many travelers experience sticker shock when they first look at river cruise pricing.

What surprised me was how much was actually included.

On my Scenic sailing, accommodations, dining, beverages, Wi-Fi, and excursions were all included. Many river cruise lines also include transfers when your flights arrive and depart on embarkation and disembarkation days.

Luxury river cruise lines often include additional touches that would cost extra elsewhere. My parents are preparing for a Seabourn sailing and recently received luxury down jackets as part of their cruise experience.

When comparing prices, it's important to look at the total experience rather than just the initial fare.

6. There Was Always Something Delcious Nearby

I never went hungry, but not because there was an endless buffet available all day.

What impressed me was how thoughtfully the food and beverage experience was designed.

While the main dining venues operated during scheduled meal times, there always seemed to be something available in the right place at the right time.

You might stop by for a mid-morning coffee and find a small pastry or treat nearby. Later in the afternoon, a different snack might appear in one of the lounges. After dinner, guests gathering for a cocktail could often find another small bite available at the bar.

The offerings changed throughout the day and throughout the cruise, creating an experience that felt curated rather than excessive. It was one of the many ways Scenic elevated the overall experience.

7. Special Sailings Can Be Extraordinary

One thing that stood out on my Scenic sailing was that it was a designated Presidents Cruise, a special sailing that featured additional touches and experiences beyond the standard itinerary.

Throughout the cruise, I returned to my cabin to find thoughtful gifts and surprises waiting for me. These small details helped make the experience feel even more memorable.

What made this sailing particularly unique was that the president of Scenic was actually onboard with us. As a travel advisor, it gave me an opportunity to learn more about the company directly from its leadership. However, the value extended far beyond the travel advisor community.

Guests had opportunities to interact with him throughout the cruise, whether on excursions, in the dining room, or during onboard events. It created a much more personal atmosphere and gave travelers a chance to connect with the people behind the brand. Rather than feeling like just another passenger, guests felt seen, heard, appreciated, and genuinely connected to the company they had chosen to travel with.

Many cruise lines offer similar specialty departures throughout the year. Whether it's a Presidents Cruise, wine-themed sailing, holiday departure, or another unique itinerary, these special sailings are worth paying attention to because they often include experiences and amenities not found on every departure.

If you're working with a travel advisor, be sure to ask about these opportunities. They can provide exceptional value and a truly unique experience.

8. Some of the Best Memories Happen Before and After the Cruise

Many travelers focus only on the sailing itself.

For me, Lyon and Nice became important parts of the experience.

I arrived in Lyon before the cruise and went directly to Louis Vuitton with a very specific shopping list. One of the advantages of purchasing luxury goods in Europe is that prices are often lower than in the United States, and visitors may also qualify for VAT tax refunds.

I purchased a Neverfull bag, wallet, passport cover with custom gold monogramming, and perfume. Remarkably, the total cost of everything I purchased was less than what I would have paid in the United States for the handbag alone.

For travelers interested in luxury shopping, this works best when you know exactly what you're looking for before you arrive.

After the cruise, I spent time exploring Nice. From the colorful markets and beautiful shops to the famous rocky beaches where you can watch planes descend toward the airport, it quickly became one of my favorite destinations in France. And of course, I made sure to bring home some local chocolates.

Adding extra days before or after your cruise can dramatically enhance the overall experience and often creates some of the most memorable moments of the trip.

9. River Cruisers Tend to Share Similar Interests

River cruises attract a particular type of traveler.

Many guests are curious, well-traveled, culturally interested, and eager to learn about the places they visit. History lovers, food enthusiasts, wine lovers, couples, solo travelers, and retirees are all commonly found onboard.

There is often a strong appreciation for local culture, authentic experiences, and meaningful travel.

The atmosphere feels very different from a large ocean cruise ship.

10. River Cruise Tip: Booking Early Can Save Thousands

One of the biggest mistakes I see travelers make is waiting too long.

The best cabins often sell first, and many cruise lines offer their strongest promotions well over a year before departure.

For example, the AmaWaterways group cruise I am currently hosting for July 2027 includes a promotion worth up to $1,500 toward a pre- or post-cruise land package. Offers like these can provide tremendous value, but they are often available only for a limited time.

Booking early not only provides the best pricing and promotions but also gives you the widest choice of cabins and travel arrangements.

Not All River Cruise Lines Are the Same

One of the most important things I've learned as a travel advisor is that river cruise lines are not interchangeable.

While my personal experience was aboard Scenic in France, each cruise line has its own personality, inclusions, and target traveler.

AmaWaterways is known for active excursions, wellness programs, and excellent value within the premium river cruise market. Uniworld is famous for its distinctive ship designs and highly inclusive luxury experience. Tauck is widely respected for exceptional service and unique land experiences, while Scenic focuses on an ultra-inclusive luxury model.

For travelers looking beyond traditional river cruising, luxury brands such as Seabourn and Regent also offer highly inclusive experiences on small ocean ships that appeal to many of the same travelers who enjoy river cruising.

The best cruise line for you depends on your travel style, interests, budget, and expectations. That's one reason many luxury travelers choose to work with a travel advisor who can help match them with the right cruise line and itinerary.

Final Thoughts

My first river cruise aboard Scenic in France exceeded my expectations in ways I never anticipated.

From watching the ship navigate locks to waking up beside another vessel, enjoying exceptional food, exploring beautiful destinations, and unpacking only once, river cruising offered a completely different style of travel than I had experienced before.

If you're considering your first river cruise, I'd be happy to help you determine which river, itinerary, and cruise line best fit your travel style and budget.

Whether you're interested in AmaWaterways, Scenic, Uniworld, Tauck, Seabourn, Regent, or another luxury cruise experience, working with a travel advisor can help you maximize value, understand what's included, and select the itinerary that's right for you.
